This is Not Just a Scarf
2025 – Sydney – Australia
A scarf is not just a piece of beautiful fabric. We don’t have a problem with the scarf itself, we have a problem with the ideology behind it. An ideology that leads to the erasure of hair, the erasure of the body, the silencing of the voice, and the suppression of thought.
Even these beautiful patterns, inspired by Islamic, Sasanian, and other Iranian motifs, reflect a focus on unity and God-centeredness. The serene shades of blue and turquoise evoke peace and spirituality, not the bold reds and yellows that speak to personal identity, awareness, and vitality.
This ideology and culture, beneath the surface beauty of these patterns and designs, aim to erase women from all spheres of social, political, and educational life. It seeks to turn women into captives, hidden and unheard beneath the delicate layers of these intricate designs.
